Natural Stone: For daily maintenance marble, travertine or terrazzo stone tiles, do not use regular floor cleaners. Instead, use water or add a small amount of a ph neutral floor cleaner to the water if needed. Make sure your mop water and mop is clean to prevent a film. Cleaning black or dark colored marble tile is very hard to prevent film. With these tiles, we often have to go back a second time with a dry microfiber pad to remove the film left by minerals in the water.

Prevent Scratches

To prevent scratches to the marble, travertine or terrazzo tiles, it is essential to have floor mats at the outside and inside of entrances. Professional grade floor mats are essential to help collect small particles that scratch these stone surfaces. These mats are often called walk-off mats and are sold by many maintenance type distributors. There are also companies that come out on a regular schedule and replace your mats so they stay clean and effective.

Keeping Floors Shiny

The key to keeping marble, travertine and terrazzo stone tile floors shiny and looking new is to polish them as soon as the dull appearance or scratches appear. ACE Flooring in Dallas uses a diamond polishing process to re-store these type of floors. If the damage is caught early enough and the scratches aren’t too deep, ACE is able to use a diamond compound; not the big heavy machine with diamond pads. Catching the damage early can save you lots of money. However, if the floors have deep scratches or have become dull, ACE will have to use special diamond grinding machines to bring the stone back to its original appearance. This same process applies to polished concrete like you see in grocery stores or do-it-yourself stores.

Flooring Wax or Sealer

Never use floor wax or sealer to try and repair marble, travertine or terrazzo stone tiles. Wax or regular floor sealers leave a film which looks hazy when applied to stone tile. There are stone impregnating sealers that soak into the stone and won’t leave a film. However, be careful using them. Our customers in the Dallas marketplace who follow our maintenance tips for keeping their marble, travertine or terrazzo floors maintained find they look newer, longer.
